What is Inverted Nipple
Correction Surgery?

Inverted nipples are a relatively common condition that is the result of short milk ducts in the breasts. These short milk ducts pull on the outer nipple, inverting it.  Other causes of nipple inversion include breastfeeding and breast sagging as a result of aging. Men, although more rarely, can also be affected by inverted nipples caused by a natural anomaly or the attachment of the nipple to the muscle.

This surgery functions to release the tissue beneath the nipples that is causing the nipple to be pulled into the breasts.  Please note that if you are experiencing sudden changed to the nipple, the breasts should be examined by your physician to rule out dangerous causes such as breast cancer that affects the milk ducts leading to nipple inversion.

Suitable Candidates

Candidates for inverted nipple correction are both men and women who are in overall good health and have nipples that are inverted some or all of the time. For some individuals, nipple inversion occurs while the nipples are not stimulated. Others may experience it at all times, even during stimulation. It is necessary for Dr. Chivers to examine you and determine exactly what level of nipple inversion you are experiencing (grading) in order to tailor the procedure to correct your condition.

Procedural Details

Inverted nipple correction surgery is a minor cosmetic surgical procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. In some cases, the severity of the condition, or if this surgery is performed in conjunction with other  cosmetic surgical procedures, this procedure may be performed under general anesthesia.

During this procedure, a small incision is made near your nipple and the shortened tethering milk duct is dissected.  The nipple is tacked to ensure that the condition does not reoccur during the healing process and incisions are closed.   The surgery takes less than one hour and patients are able to return home and go back to work within a couple days.
