Belkyra (Kybella)
Belkyra (Kybella)
Belkyra, also known as Kybella, is a naturally produced chemical in the body that breaks down fatty tissue through emulsification of fat. Its active ingredient is deoxycholic acid which is injected into areas with stubborn fat beneath the chin resulting in an improved the profile appearance and the reduction of a double chin. Belkyra has been used safely in many patients and is an FDA approved management for those who would like to improve the asthetics of their jawline.

Suitable Candidates
Candidates for Belkyra are patients that have excess persistent fat below their chin. This procedure is best performed on patients who have lost weight but have redundant fat in the chin area. Patients that do not expect to keep the weight off or expect to gain more weight are not great candidates for this procedure. With additional weight gain after Belkyra injections, new fat growth in the chin area is likely.
Loose Skin
While Belkyra will remove fat cells, it will not remove the loose skin that persists after resorption of the fat in the area. Typically, the skin’s natural elasticity will cause it to contract. However, for some patients, there can be residual loose skin, and an additional procedure maybe needed. At the Canadian Plastic Surgery Centre, surgical options for skin tightening such as neck lifts maybe needed. You will be provided with all of your options before the Belkyra procedure starts so that you can look exactly the way you want after all work is complete.
Procedural Details
The Belkyra injection procedure that we perform at the Canadian Plastic Surgery Centre in Toronto is quite simple. Similar to Botox treatments, Belkyra is injected into the chin near the site of the excess fat. Belkyra then chemically breaks down the fat cells in the area, removing them slowly over time. This procedure typically requires multiple injections performed over the span of a couple of weeks. The final result of the treatments is seen about 1 month after the final session.
Recovery
There is no recovery time associated with Belkyra injections. Because this is an non-surgical procedure, after injections, patient can return to their daily routine. Sometimes immediately after the injection, patients do experience some minor swelling and discomfort that can last for a few days. However, most individuals will be able to return to work without any time off.
The most important thing to remember about this procedure is that it does not work immediately. Nearly all patients require multiple injections over multiple weeks before obtaining the results that they are seeking. If you look in the mirror the day after your first Belkyra injections, you should not expect to see the full results you are looking for. This is a procedure that requires patience.
